Exploring Science and Culture: Exchange Journey of IPB University’s PBT Master’s Students in Yamaguchi, Japan

Two master’s students from IPB University’s Study Program of Plant Breeding and Biotechnology (PBT), Safira Awaliyah Ramadhani and Nida Yusrina, participated in the 2025 Student Exchange Support Program at Yamaguchi University, Japan, from November 1, 2025, to January 9, 2026. The program also welcomed students from Thailand and Vietnam, fostering international collaboration and cultural exchange.

At IPB University, Safira and Nida conduct research on foxtail millet under the supervision of Dr. Sintho Wahyuning Ardie. Their experiments at Yamaguchi University, which involved six grain varieties—white mochiawa, yellow mochiawa, amaranth, hie, mochikibi, and quinoa—broadened their knowledge of cereal commodities and enriched their comparative understanding of grain quality. Under the guidance of Prof. Masayoshi Shigyo and doctoral student Le Manh Tri, they carried out protein quantification (Bradford method), mineral content analysis (ICP-OES), and amylose–amylopectin determination (iodine method), all essential parameters in starch quality studies.

Beyond research, both students actively engaged in weekly seminars organized by Prof. Shigyo’s group. Each seminar featured student-led presentations of recent scientific articles followed by group discussions, sharpening their critical thinking, literature comprehension, and academic communication skills. They also joined routine laboratory and field cleaning sessions, instilling discipline and responsibility in maintaining a safe and organized research environment.

The program emphasized not only academic growth but also cultural immersion. Safira and Nida participated in international student gatherings, including a welcoming party where Safira performed Japanese songs to showcase cross-cultural appreciation. They also joined traditional activities such as mochi-making, which strengthened friendships among international peers.

Their participation in this program would not have been possible without the recommendation of Prof. Dr. Edi Santosa, a long-term counterpart of Prof. Shigyo, whose support facilitated this valuable collaboration.

Through these experiences, the students broadened their perspectives on global science and culture, while enhancing their English presentation skills and intercultural competence. Importantly, their participation in this program will be formally recognized at IPB University as 2 credits under the course Special Topics (PBT150A), ensuring that their academic and cultural achievements contribute directly to their graduate studies.

This exchange program reflects IPB University’s commitment to providing students with opportunities for international exposure, academic excellence, and cultural enrichment. Safira and Nida’s journey in Yamaguchi stands as a testament to the value of global engagement in shaping future plant breeding and biotechnology professionals.
