“BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF GENETIC ENGINEERING WITH SPECIAL EMPHASIZE ON INSECT
RESISTANCE AND HERBICIDE TOLERANCE”
APRIL 24-26, 2012
Plant Molecular Biology Lab (PMB LAB), Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture
Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), Bogor-INDONESIA
BACKGROUND
The world population have increased significantly in recent years. The trend of population increases tend to be consistence in the years to come. The increase in world populations also means more demand for food.
On the other hand, agricultural land convertion into housing and other non-agricultural uses tend to increase significantly. As consequences of arable land conversion, food production will decrease significantly.
Such a dilematic condition pose challenges for plant breeders to generate more productive crop varieties. However, for a number of food crops, exploitation of genetic variabilities have almost reached maximum level. As a consequence, the genetic gain as a result of breeding activity will be low.
